On track – Cathy Freeman

This story originally appeared in Deadly Vibe Magazine Issue #16 March, 1998

We have just opened The Vault – all the back stories from old editions – dating back to the 1990s. To know where we are going, it's important to understand where we have been. And that story you can follow in the Deadly Vibe Vault!

Well Cathy is in Austin Texas for a two month training camp with Manager Nick Bideau and training partner Bryce Barnwell, the under 20’s 400m champion.

At the moment Cathy is committed to training and has put together what she describes as her three best training weeks of the year.

“The difference between my training here and in Australia is like night and day. Here I feel like just another athlete with no more pressures on me other than trying to get myself into good shape. The rest of the time I’m able to relax which allows me to turn up to training each day mentally sharp to prepare for the races ahead.”

Her training partner while here in Australia, Sandie Richards has also met up with Cathy and Bryce for some intense training before they start competition.

Cathy has had a couple of 100m & 200m races so far to get her starts going. She is very focussed and realises she has a lot of work to do before the Commonwealth Games.

So far Cathy came 6th in 100m University of El Paso invitational with a time of 11.56 and 2nd in 200m in the Texas invitational behind Fali Ogunkoya from Nigeria in 22.84.

Train hard Cathy and your fans will be looking forward to some more inspirational words in the next issue of Deadly Vibe.
